ADVANSTAR ACQUIRES MULTIMEDIA TRADE SHOWS INC.
--Adds Canada's leading trade show servicing the digital content creation market
CLEVELAND, OH — Advanstar Communications Inc., a leading worldwide business information company, this year acquired Multimedia Trade Shows Inc., producers of newMedia, the leading trade show and conference servicing the Canadian digital content creation market. Multimedia Trade Shows Inc. is located in Concord, Ontario (a suburb of Toronto).
Established in 1984, newMedia is an international trade show and conference showcasing digital technology from creative applications to delivery across all media platforms. The event connects manufacturers, distributors, and service providers with qualified creative, technical, business, education and training buyers from all industry segments. newMedia is sponsored by many industry associations, including the Interactive Multimedia Arts & Technologies (IMAT) Association, which was founded by Bruce and Jai Cole of Multimedia Trade Shows Inc.
The 1998 event held in May at the Metropolitan Toronto Convention Center had nearly 200 exhibitors and utilized more than 40,000 net square feet of space. More than 20,000 visitors came to the event, including more than 1,300 conference attendees. In 1999, newMedia will be held again at the Metropolitan Toronto Convention Center with the trade show running June 2-4 and the conference June 1-4.
Robert Krakoff, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Advanstar, said, "Trade shows in both the traditional and emerging media sectors generally focus on one industry segment, especially in the United States. newMedia is a broad show for content creators, educators and professional production professionals. With continued market growth expected, newMedia provides Advanstar the platform into the Canadian market and the opportunity to branch off into niche events."
newMedia will join Advanstar's Digital Media Group, which is overseen by Vice President and General Manager Danny Phillips. The Digital Media Group includes Post Magazine, the leading magazine serving the animation, film, and video post production industry; New Tekniques, the leading magazine for LightWave 3D and Video Toaster/Flyer users and dealers; and Digital Content Creation (DCC) Expo, the only U.S. exposition dedicated to the digital content creation marketplace. In November, Advanstar will launch DCC (Digital Content Creation) magazine, which will serve professionals working in digital video, animation and special effects.
"Advanstar is excited about the opportunities this acquisition presents", Phillips said. "We believe the growth prospects for the digital content creation market in Canada and globally are outstanding. NewMedia strengthens our portfolio of global business-to-business products serving this market."
Multimedia Trade Shows was founded by the husband and wife team of Bruce and Jai Cole. Mr. Cole said, "newMedia has grown substantially since its beginning in 1984. We felt it was a good time for the event to move forward and be run by a group whose business is running international events, and whose experience will allow the event to continue to evolve. With Advanstar's resources, I am confident that newMedia will continue to flourish."
newMedia will continue to operate from its Concord, Ontario location with the same staff. Mr. Cole will join Advanstar as Regional Manager, Canada - Information Technology Events Group. Mrs. Cole will continue as a consultant.
Multimedia Trade Shows was Advanstar's 13th acquisition or joint venture in 1998 and 23rd since Hellman & Friedman Capital Partners III, L.P. became the owner in May 1996. Advanstar Communications is a worldwide business information company, which publishes 106 business magazines and directories, produces more than 105 exhibitions and conferences throughout the world, provides direct marketing, database and reference products and services, specializing in select business markets. The company has over 1,300 employees and currently operates from multiple offices in the United States, Canada, Latin America, United Kingdom, France and Asia.

ADVANSTAR ACQUIRES APPLIED BUSINESS TELECOMMUNICATIONS
--World leading conference, tradeshow organizer and publisher in the teleconferencing and distance learning markets
CLEVELAND, OHIO – Advanstar Communications Inc. has acquired Applied Business teleCommunications (ABC), producers of the leading conferences, tradeshows and publication focusing on the application of audio, data and video (A/D/V) teleconferencing and distance learning technology. ABC's portfolio of products and services provides executives and information technology professionals the means to learn how to incorporate this technology into the daily operation of their business.
ABC currently produces three main conference and tradeshow events: TeleCon, held each fall in Anaheim, CA; TeleCon East held each spring in Washington DC; and TeleCon Europe, held in early summer in London, England. All of these events are sponsored by the United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA). ABC also publishes Teleconference Magazine, a monthly "how-to" magazine to help executives implement and manage A/D/V systems and applications.
In addition, ABC has several ancillary activities including the Global Summit of the Teleconferencing Industry, which is an annual meeting bringing together leaders in the teleconferencing industry, and the Education and Training Technology Conference (ETTCon), which debuts this month, held jointly with the Texas Chapter of the USDLA.
Skip Farber, vice president, Business Development of Advanstar's parent company, Advanstar Holdings, Inc. said, "ABC has helped define the explosive A/D/V market, which is expected to grow from $7.5 billion in 1997 to $35 billion in the year 2002. Their events and publication provide the marketplace for professionals to learn how to use the tools and rapidly more efficient technology for this high-growth industry."
ABC fits perfectly with our world leading position in telecommunications and call center technology events and publications. These and Advanstar's Information Technology group are directed from Advanstar's Santa Ana, CA office by Executive Vice President Glenn Rogers.
"We are pleased to add ABC to our family of products and services that support the information technology and communications market," Rogers said. "Advanstar is committed to being the leading business information provider to these markets, and developing integrated marketing solutions for our customers."
ABC was founded by Patrick Portway in 1980, principally as a systems integrator of videoconferencing systems. In 1981, the TeleCon show and Teleconference Magazine were launched. In 1983, ABC stopped selling systems integration systems and focused its activities on managing the conferences, tradeshows and its publication.
"ABC and the TeleCon shows have grown to the point that we needed the resources and structure of a large corporation to continue to grow," Portway said. "Advanstar is the leading tradeshow producer in the world in telecommunications and call center technology. We look forward to being a part of their success."
Mr. Portway is the founder and executive director of the USDLA. He will continue his association with ABC as a consultant to Advanstar and in his duties to USDLA. ABC will continue to operate from its current operation in Brentwood, CA with its current management.
Advanstar Communications is a world-wide business information company which publishes 105 business magazines, professional journals and directories; produces 106 exhibitions and conferences throughout the world; provides direct marketing, database, directory, and reference products and services, specializing in markets which span from art to application technology; travel to telecommunications. ADVANSTAR AND MM EDITIONS CREATE JOINT VENTURE
TO OWN AND OPERATE SeCA —Leading French Call Center Exposition and Conference and Industry Directory
CLEVELAND, OHIO — Advanstar Communications Inc., a leading worldwide business information company, and MM Editions, a business-to-business publishing and tradeshow company headquartered in Suresnes, France (near Paris) have formed a 50/50 partnership to produce SeCA, the French call center exposition and conference, and the Guide du Centre d'Appels et du Télémarketing, a directory for the French call center market.
SeCA is the leading international call center event in France for professionals interested in the day-to-day management and operational issues facing their call centers. The first SeCA show was held in Paris in March 1997 with 61 exhibitors utilizing 1,000 square meters of exhibit space. The 1998 event held last April sold out with 138 exhibitors (a 126% increase from 1997) occupying 2,700 square meters of exhibit space (a 170% increase from 1997). The 1998 SeCA show had 5,700 visitors up 58% from 1997. SeCA will be held in Paris in May of 1999 on 4,000 square meters.

SeCA becomes our 4th call center and computer telephony event in Europe and 13th event worldwide."
Louis Vaudeville, president of MM Editions, said, "I am looking forward to our partnership with Advanstar. They have built an impressive group of products and services serving the call center industry worldwide. We expect their exposition management and call center industry expertise will confirm SeCA as the second most important show in the European industry (behind Advanstar's VOICE Europe in London)."
MM Editions was founded in 1987 with Louis Vaudeville, the majority shareholder and senior manager. Louis Vaudeville is an experienced senior publishing professional formerly with Hachette. MM Editions is a fast growing company which publishes four business magazines, 12 directories and produces eight exhibitions in the marketing and software industry. SeCA and the directory will continue to be produced, under the joint venture, from its current location near Paris, France.
Mr. Vaudeville will continue as the senior manager of SeCA and the directory and work directly with Danny Phillips, vice president, and Simon Cooper, general manager, of Advanstar's Call Center group.
